Prostate Cancer Annual Statistics

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in U.S. men, with about 1 man in 9 being diagnosed during his lifetime. It is also the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind lung cancer. About 1 man in 41 will die of prostate cancer.

The ACS estimates that in 2019, about 174,650 men in the U.S. will be newly diagnosed with prostate cancer, and 31,620 men will die from the disease.

For men who are diagnosed early, there is reason to be hopeful. The 5- year relative survival rate for men diagnosed with localized or regional prostate cancer is nearly 100%. Localized cancer is contained within the prostate, and regional disease has spread outside the prostate to the lymph nodes or nearby structures. In comparison, for men with distant metastases, in which the cancer has spread to distant parts of the body such as the liver or lungs, the 5-year relative survival rate is just 30%.
