Could annual MRI and targeted biopsy be economical for screening?

This study examined whether an annual prostate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and potential MRI- guided biopsy are cost-effective compared with a transrectal ultrasonographic (standard) biopsy for men with a positive prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test result.

In an economic evaluation, annual MRI and potential MRI-guided biopsy for prostate cancer found improved economic value compared with standard biopsy for men with a serum PSA level of 2.5ng/ml or more beginning at 65 years of age. This and other similar studies reflect an increasing role for the use of MRI imaging in the early diagnosis and treatment of clinically localized prostate cancer.
