A Prospective Comparison of Image Quality and Diagnostic Performance: 5-T versus 3-T MRI Scanning of the Prostate

A recent study compared image quality and diagnostic performance of 5-Tesla (5T) versus 3-Tesla (3T) MRI in 67 patients with suspected prostate cancer. T wo radiologists independently reviewed images from both systems using qualitative and quantitative assessments. Histopathology from biopsy and surgery was the diagnostic reference.
The results showed that 5-T MRI consistently produced superior image quality and enabled clearer visualization of key prostatic structures such as the capsule, seminal vesicles, and neurovascular bundles, as well as more precise lesion margins. These technical improvements translated into better diagnostic performance, and 5-T MRI outperformed 3-T MRI in detecting prostate cancer and assessing pathological features.
Overall, the study provides preliminary clinical evidence that 5-T MRI is feasible and offers meaningful improvements over 3-T MRI for diagnosing and evaluating prostate cancer.
