ChatGPT May Help Explain Prostate Biopsy Results to Patients

Understanding a prostate biopsy report can be difficult for many patients. Medical terminology and pathology reports often contain unfamiliar language that can make an already stressful situation even more confusing.

Researchers investigated whether ChatGPT-4 could translate prostate biopsy reports into easy-to-understand explanations for patients. After generating simplified reports, urologists and pathologists reviewed them for accuracy, completeness, and readability.

Overall, the physicians found the AI-generated summaries to be accurate and written at an appropriate reading level. Although every report required some physician editing before being shared with patients, the reviewers agreed that editing an AI-generated explanation was faster than writing one from scratch.

The study suggests that artificial intelligence could become a valuable tool for improving communication between physicians and patients. However, the authors stress that a physician should always review AI-generated reports before they are provided to patients.
