Comparing Prostate Cancer Deaths Across a Nation

Arecent study compared prostate cancer death rates in 41,503 men across Sweden who were either treated with radiation therapy or had radical prostatectomies.

When comparing only the rates of death, the study found a significantly higher risk of prostate cancer death with radiation therapy versus radical prostatectomy. However, when the researchers accounted for multiple variables, such as age, Gleason grade group, and clinical staging, the difference in risks of prostate cancer deaths was much smaller between the two groups – including a narrower gap than found in previous studies. The authors suggested that patients and physicians should consider potential side effects when selecting a treatment path for prostate cancer.
