surveillance (AS) with the recommendation from a urologist being the strongest determinant, according to a recent study published online in Cancer.

A survey administered to newly diagnosed Black and White patients who were 75 years or older found that 57% of the study participants chose AS over definitive treatment. Older age, White race, and higher education were patient factors associated with initial AS decision. Data in the study were included for participants identified through metro Detroit and Georgia population-based cancer registries. Shared patient-physician treatment decision, greater prostate cancer knowledge, and residence in metro-Detroit compared with Georgia were other factors associated with the decision to undergo AS.

Researchers stated that “study results indicate that patient perceptions and acceptance of AS have improved over time, although geographical and racial differences remain.”
