Prostate Cancer Foundation releases screening recommendations for Black men

Categories: Spring 2024

The Prostate Cancer Foundation recently released screening recommendations for Black men. A PSA should be the first-line test for prostate cancer screening. Black men with a heightened risk for prostate cancer due

to a strong family history or being a carrier of high-risk genetic variants should undergo PSA screening as early as 40 years. A baseline PSA test should be done between ages 40 and 45 years, with annual screening strongly considered depending on PSA value and individual health status. Black men older than age 70 years who have been undergoing prostate cancer screening should talk with their healthcare provider regarding whether or not to continue PSA testing. Relevant factors to consider include age, life expectancy, health status, family history, and prior PSA levels.
