“Do patients with prostate cancer benefit from exercise?”

Categories: Spring 2024

A systematic review and meta-analysis

This study investigated the impact of exercise on the quality of life (QoL) and metabolic health in men diagnosed with prostate cancer. The study, which included 33 randomized controlled trials with 2567 participants, found that exercise had a positive effect on cancer-specific QoL, albeit a small one. Additionally, exercise showed a moderate to large positive effect on cardiovascular fitness, with aerobic exercise being more effective than resistance exercise. Positive effects were also observed in lower body strength, whole-body fat mass, general mental health, and blood pressure. However, no significant effects were seen in fatigue, lean body mass, and general physical health. In conclusion, the study suggests that exercise, particularly aerobic exercise, is effective in improving metabolic health in men with prostate cancer, although the impact on QoL is relatively small and not influenced by the choice of exercise modality.
